Back when The Singularity was a thing I saw an announcement about “neuromorphic chips” and thought we were on our way. Then I found they were basic point neurons on a chip. There weren’t enough connections to create the complexity needed. I also knew that there’s not enough DNA that codes for brain development for the structure to be very complicated and it had to be far simpler that anyone had imagined, and highly replicated, like DNA itself. I found the idea that a big enough pile of labeled garbage could become self-aware, sprout emotions, and want to murder us to be absurd. No one would consider a machine that would turn the planet into paper clips intelligent in any way. Then I found On Intelligence and the early Numenta research and the need for lots of connections, and I knew this was where the action was going to be.
